Brief Description
Critters is a 1986 American science fiction comedy horror film directed by Stephen Herek. The plot follows a group of small, furry, and highly aggressive alien monsters known as "Crites" who escape an asteroid prison transport and crash-land in rural Kansas to feast on the local population. Hot on their trail are two shape-shifting intergalactic bounty hunters tasked with tracking them down.
Plot:
When the carnivorous Crites hijack a spaceship and target Earth, they cut off the power and telephone lines at an isolated farm. They begin terrorizing the Brown family (played by Dee Wallace, Billy "Green" Bush, Scott Grimes, and Nadine Van der Velde). The family must team up with a local mechanic and the alien bounty hunters—who cause plenty of chaotic collateral damage themselves—to survive the night. Key Details & Trivia: The "Gremlins" Comparison: While widely compared to Joe Dante's 1984 hit Gremlins, the script for Critters was actually written by Domonic Muir two months before Gremlins went into production. It underwent rewrites simply to minimize the similarities. Creature Features: Unlike other cinematic aliens, the Crites roll around like carnivorous tumbleweeds, can shoot tranquilizing needles from their bodies, and grow larger the more they eat. Legacy: The movie was a box office success, grossing $13.2 million. It launched a long-running franchise that includes multiple sequels—notably Critters 3, which marked the film debut of a young Leonardo DiCaprio.
