Brief Description
The Stuff (1985) is an American satirical science fiction horror film written and directed by B-movie auteur Larry Cohen. The film serves as a campy, grotesque allegory for American consumerism, corporate greed, and the junk food industry. While it split audiences upon its original theatrical release due to its shifting tone between horror and campy comedy, it has developed a massive cult following for its unique premise, practical B-movie effects, and prophetic commentary on advertising.
Plot:
The story begins when railroad workers discover a mysterious, creamy white substance bubbling out of the earth. Finding it incredibly sweet and addictive, corporate executives mass-market the goo as "The Stuff"—a zero-calorie, delicious dessert craze that quickly sweeps the nation and devastates ice cream sales. To uncover the secret recipe and save their businesses, competitive ice cream barons hire David "Mo" Rutherford, a smooth-talking former FBI agent turned industrial saboteur. As Mo investigates, he teams up with Jason, a young boy who realized the dessert was alive after seeing it move on its own in his family refrigerator, and Nicole, the advertising executive who originally designed the product's marketing campaign. Together, they uncover a horrific truth: The Stuff is actually a sentient, parasitic organism. It brainwashes those who eat it, transforming them into mindless, zombie-like "Stuffies" before literally consuming them from the inside out and leaving them as hollow shells.
