Brief Description
Re-Animator is a 1985 American science fiction horror-comedy film directed by Stuart Gordon and loosely based on H.P. Lovecraft’s 1922 serialized short story, "Herbert West–Reanimator". The film has achieved legendary cult status for its unhinged blend of intense, over-the-top gore, dark slapstick humor, and creative practical special effects.
Plot:
The story follows Herbert West (played by Jeffrey Combs), an arrogant, intensely driven medical student who arrives at Miskatonic University after a mysterious and gruesome incident involving his mentor in Switzerland. West has invented a glowing, phosphorescent green serum—a reagent—capable of bringing dead tissue back to life. He moves in with a well-meaning classmate, Dan Cain (Bruce Abbott), and quickly convinces him to help test the serum, starting with Dan's dead pet cat. The experiments soon escalate to fresh human corpses inside the university morgue. However, there is a major catch: the reanimated subjects do not return as their former selves.
Instead, they wake up as aggressive, mindless, and feral beasts possessing superhuman strength. Chaos completely spirals out of control when the university’s hard-nosed professor, Dr. Carl Hill (David Gale), tries to steal West’s discovery. After West takes drastic measures to defend his work, a decapitated but fully reanimated Dr. Hill leads a literal army of twitching, chaotic corpses against the students and Dan’s fiancée, Megan Halsey (Barbara Crampton). Originally released unrated because its sheer volume of blood and transgressive themes defied standard MPAA ratings, Re-Animator became a massive hit on home video.
