Brief Description
Godzilla 1985 is a 1985 sci-fi monster film that serves as a heavily re-edited American localization of Toho's Japanese film The Return of Godzilla (1984). Co-directed by K?ji Hashimoto and R.J. Kizer, it functions as a direct sequel to the original 1954 Godzilla, completely ignoring the multiple lighthearted sequels from the intervening decades to return the franchise to its dark, nuclear-terror roots.
Plot:
Exactly 30 years after the original monster's rampage, an enormous, 80-meter-tall Godzilla emerges from the ocean and destroys a Soviet nuclear submarine. The destruction of the submarine ignites intense political gridlock, pushing the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war until Japan reveals Godzilla is the true culprit. Godzilla attacks Tokyo to absorb nuclear energy from power stations, easily deflecting Japan's high-tech military defense weapon, the Super X. A Japanese scientist discovers that Godzilla's brain operates like a bird's, prompting a desperate plan to lure the beast into a volcanic crater using acoustic avian distress signals. Actor Raymond Burr reprises his role as American journalist Steve Martin from the 1956 localized film Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, acting as a grim, omniscient consultant to the U.S. military.
