Brief Description
Dragonslayer (1981) is a dark fantasy film directed by Matthew Robbins and co-produced by Walt Disney Productions and Paramount Pictures. Set in the 6th-century post-Roman kingdom of Urland, the narrative delivers a more grounded, somber, and surprisingly intense tone compared to typical Disney productions of its era. While the film flopped financially upon release—grossing only $14.1 million against an $18 million budget—it grew into a massive cult classic. Critics and filmmakers alike praise the movie for its legendary creature design.
Plot:
The story follows Galen Bradwarden (played by Peter MacNicol), a young sorcerer's apprentice. When his master, the powerful wizard Ulrich (Ralph Richardson), is killed before embarking on a quest to save Urland, the burden falls to Galen. The kingdom is held hostage by Vermithrax Pejorative, a terrifying, 400-year-old fire-breathing dragon. To appease the beast and prevent utter devastation, the local king forces the population into a biannual lottery to sacrifice virgin maidens. Armed with a magically enchanted spear and a shield crafted from the dragon's own scales, Galen sets off to slay Vermithrax and end the cruel lottery system.
