Brief Description
C.H.U.D. is a 1984 American science-fiction horror film directed by Douglas Cheek that has become a prominent B-movie cult classic. The film's title is an acronym for "Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers". The movie is celebrated for blending classic creature-feature thrills and low-budget, campy special effects with dark humor and biting social commentary on urban decay, environmental hazards, and government negligence.
Plot:
Set in a gritty, 1980s New York City, the story begins with a series of sudden, bizarre disappearances on the city streets—particularly among the local homeless population living in the subterranean tunnels. An investigative fashion photographer named George Cooper (John Heard) and a local soup kitchen operator named A.J. "The Reverend" Shepherd (Daniel Stern) team up with a tough police captain (Christopher Curry) to investigate. Together, they uncover a horrific government cover-up: a corrupt agency has been dumping toxic chemical waste into the New York sewer system. This radioactive waste has mutated the underground transient population into grotesque, flesh-eating monsters that are now emerging from the manholes to hunt the citizens above ground.
