Brief Description
Videodrome (1983) is a Canadian science fiction body horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg, starring James Woods and Debbie Harry. Set in Toronto, the film is widely celebrated as a prophetic, "techno-surrealist" cult classic that explores the physical and psychological consequences of media consumption.
Plot:
Max Renn (James Woods), the CEO of a sleazy UHF television station called CIVIC-TV, constantly searches for extreme programming to attract viewers. He stumbles across a pirate broadcast signal called "Videodrome," which broadcasts hyper-realistic, unedited torture and murder. As Max investigates the origins of the broadcast, he uncovers a massive crypto-government mind-control conspiracy orchestrated by a corporation named Spectacular Optical. He learns that the Videodrome signal isn't just entertainment—it carries a malicious broadcast frequency that causes permanent brain tumors and hallucinations in its viewers, fundamentally rewriting their perception of reality. Max descends into signal-induced madness, experiencing grotesque bodily transformations—such as a VCR-like slit appearing in his torso—blurring the lines between human flesh and technology.
