Brief Description
The Devonsville Terror (1983) is an American supernatural folk-horror film directed by Ulli Lommel and starring Suzanna Love and Donald Pleasence. Inspired by the Salem Witch Trials, the movie centers on a 300-year-old witch's curse in a conservative New England town. Scholars frequently cite it as an early, unique example of a feminist-inspired horror film.
Plot:
In 1683, the patriarchal founding fathers of Devonsville brutally torture and execute three women suspected of witchcraft. As they die, one of the condemned women delivers a vengeful curse upon the town. Exactly 300 years later in 1983, three independent, progressive women move to the deeply traditional town: Jenny Scanlon (Suzanna Love), a free-thinking schoolteacher. Chris (Mary Walden), an environmental scientist. Monica (Deanna Haas), a radio disc jockey. Their assertive attitudes and liberal mindsets immediately anger and threaten the bigoted, male-dominated town leadership. Paranoia spreads rapidly when a local man murders his wife, seemingly activating the centuries-old curse.
Meanwhile, the town doctor, Dr. Warley (Donald Pleasence), tries to investigate the history of the curse using past-life hypnotic regression. As strange and inexplicable events plague the community, the superstitious male elders suspect the new arrivals are agents of Satan. Unbeknownst to them, one of the women is the literal reincarnation of the executed witch, returned to exact bloody, supernatural revenge on the descendants of her original inquisitors. Originally intended for theaters, it was released directly to home video by Embassy Home Entertainment in October 1983.
