Brief Description
Spasms (1983) is a Canadian horror film directed by William Fruet and starring screen icons Peter Fonda and Oliver Reed. The movie is based on the 1979 horror novel Death Bite by Michael Maryk and Brent Monahan. The film is notable for its behind-the-scenes practical effects work. The mechanical snake was constructed by Raymond Mendez and Neal Martz, while the graphic gore effects were designed by legendary makeup artists Dick Smith (The Exorcist) and Stephan Dupuis (The Fly).
Plot:
The story follows Jason Kincaid (Oliver Reed), a reclusive British millionaire who survived a bite from a massive, supernatural taipan snake on a remote Micronesian island—an attack that killed his brother. The bite leaves Kincaid with a permanent, torturous telepathic and kinetic link to the giant serpent. Hoping to study the creature and understand his affliction, Kincaid has the monster captured and shipped to an American university laboratory. There, parapsychologist and ESP expert Dr. Tom Brasilian (Peter Fonda) attaches monitoring equipment to Kincaid to track his psychic bond. Chaos erupts when the giant snake escapes its enclosure and embarks on a murderous rampage, unleashing gruesome kills (including a theatrical "expanding and exploding" venom effect on its victims). Complicating the hunt, a Satanic cult attempts to steal the snake, believing it to be the physical embodiment of the Devil. Kincaid, Dr. Brasilian, and Kincaid's niece must use the psychic link to track the monster down before it kills again.
