Brief Description
Scalps (1983) is a low-budget American supernatural slasher film directed and written by B-movie icon Fred Olen Ray. Shot on a micro-budget of roughly $15,000, it is known for its grimy 16mm home-movie aesthetic, practical gore effects, and status as a cult classic of 1980s independent horror. True to its slasher roots, the movie features a high body count with explicit practical effects showcasing decapitation, throat-slitting, and the titular act of scalping.
Plot:
The story follows six college archaeology students who venture out into a remote California desert to dig for Native American artifacts. They proceed with the dig despite explicit warnings from their college faculty and an elderly Native American man who tells them not to cross into the forbidden land. By desecrating the ancient burial ground, the students inadvertently awaken and anger Black Claw, an evil, vengeful shaman spirit (often depicted erratically in the film's final edit as a lion-headed entity). The malevolent spirit possesses one of the students, Randy, transforming him into a killer who begins systematically slaughtering his classmates one by one using a variety of weapons, including a tomahawk and arrows.
