Brief Description
Cat People (1982) is an American supernatural erotic horror film directed by Paul Schrader. It is an explicit, stylized remake of the 1942 classic film of the same name. Set in the decadent backdrop of New Orleans, the story transforms the subtle, psychological tension of the original movie into a graphic, Freudian exploration of sexuality, myth, and violence.
Plot:
The film follows Irena Gallier (played by Nastassja Kinski), a beautiful and seemingly innocent young woman who travels to New Orleans to reunite with her estranged brother, Paul (Malcolm McDowell). Shortly after her arrival, a wild black panther kills a woman and is captured by local zoologists. Irena finds herself drawn to the majestic beast and falls in love with the zoo's curator, Oliver Yates (John Heard). As her relationship with Oliver deepens, her brother Paul reveals a terrifying family secret: they belong to an ancient, shapeshifting race of werecats. If they become sexually aroused by a human, they transform into predatory jungle cats and are forced to kill to regain human form. To break the curse and remain human, they can only mate with their own kind, leading Paul to make incestuous advances toward Irena.
