Brief Description
Xtro II: The Second Encounter (1990) is a British-Canadian science fiction horror film directed by Harry Bromley Davenport. Despite the title, it is an "in-name-only" sequel that completely discards the narrative of the bizarre 1982 original film, pivoting instead to a premise heavily inspired by James Cameron's Aliens. The film was shot on a very low budget, primarily utilizing a single industrial factory location dressed up with 8-bit computer monitors to simulate a high-tech bunker. It features early special makeup and practical monster effects by artist Toby Lindala.
Plot:
Deep beneath the Rocky Mountains at a top-secret U.S. government facility, a team of military researchers runs Project Nexus—a computer-powered program designed to open gateways into parallel dimensions. When a three-person exploratory team travels through the gateway to an alternate dimension, communication is abruptly severed. Concerned about losing funding from the aggressive Secretary of Defense, the facility's lead scientists, Dr. Alex Summerfield (Paul Koslo) and Dr. Julie Casserly (Tara Buckman), decide to bring back the project's rogue original designer, Dr. Ron Shepherd (Jan-Michael Vincent). Shortly after Shepherd arrives, the lone female survivor of the portal expedition, Marshall, is pulled back through the rift. However, she is "infected". In a sequence strongly echoing the chestburster scene from Alien, a voracious, flesh-eating extraterrestrial predator violently bursts from her body.
The facility's security computer immediately places the underground complex into a strict, air-locked containment lockdown, trapping everyone inside with the beast. As the alien stalks the scientists and military guards through dark hallways and ventilation shafts, it consumes the personnel and possesses the ability to spawn or regenerate through human hosts. Eventually, Dr. Summerfield himself is attacked, becomes infected, and begins to mutate into a creature. Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Casserly spend the final act battling the alien while trying to find a way out of the sealed complex. They manage to force the rapidly mutating Summerfield back through the dimensional gateway to trap him on the other side. While they appear to survive the nightmare, the film closes on a classic horror cliffhanger: a remaining survivor named Lisa speaks, but the monstrous voice of the alien echoes from her mouth, hinting that the infection has not been entirely contained.
