Brief Description
Watchers II (1990) is a direct-to-video sci-fi horror film produced by B-movie icon Roger Corman and directed by Thierry Notz. While marketed as a sequel to the 1988 film Watchers, it functions more like a re-adaptation and standalone retreading of [Dean R. Koontz's 1987 best-selling novel](0.6.1, 0.6.2). It is widely regarded by fans as being structurally closer to the source material than its predecessor.
Plot:
The story kicks off at a top-secret genetic engineering laboratory. Animal rights activists break into the facility to release the animals, inadvertently causing chaos. During the break-in, two highly classified, genetically altered life forms escape into the outside world: Einstein: A golden retriever engineered with human-level, super-intelligent capability to reason, learn, and communicate. The Outsider (AE-74): A vicious, mutated hybrid monster designed as a non-human military assassin. The twist is that the two creatures share an irreversible psychic telepathic link. The Outsider is driven by an engineered, uncontrollable instinct to hunt down the dog and brutally eliminate anyone who makes contact with it. While on the run, the highly clever Einstein crosses paths with and befriends Paul Ferguson, an AWOL U.S. Marine fugitive. Recognizing the dog's eerie intelligence, Paul protects him. Realizing they are being hunted, Paul reaches out to Dr. Barbara White, an animal psychologist from the very lab where the experiments took place. Together, the trio goes on the run across an urban landscape, trying to elude NSA troops and the murderous monster, which leaves a gory trail of bodies in its wake.
