Brief Description
Tremors (1990) is a landmark American monster comedy-horror film directed by Ron Underwood and written by S. S. Wilson and Brent Maddock. Celebrated as a 1950s B-movie homage, it blends clever practical effects, suspense, and buddy-comedy elements. While a modest box office performer theatrically, it achieved massive success on home video, transforming into a beloved cult classic that launched a multi-film franchise.
Plot:
In the tiny, isolated desert settlement of Perfection, Nevada (population: 14), handymen Valentine "Val" McKee and Earl Bassett decide they are finally tired of their dull, low-paying lives and prepare to leave for a bigger town. As they drive out of the valley, they encounter a series of mysterious, gruesome deaths:
They find Edgar, the town drunk, dead at the top of an electrical tower, having died of dehydration because he was too terrified to climb down. They find the severed head of a local sheepherder, and his entire flock slaughtered. A pair of construction workers are buried alive by an unseen force beneath the dirt road, which also triggers a rockslide that blocks the only road leading out of the valley, trapping the residents.
Val and Earl return to town and cross paths with Rhonda LeBeck, a graduate seismology student conducting field research on strange, unnatural underground vibrations. When a mysterious, snake-like appendage hitches a ride on their truck axle and gets torn off, they realize the town is being hunted by an unknown species. The town soon discovers they are facing four giant, prehistoric, subterranean worm-like monsters dubbed "Graboids". The creatures grow up to 30 feet long, burrow through the soft desert floor at high speeds, and hunt strictly by sensing surface vibrations and sound. As the Graboids begin picking off the townspeople one by one, the survivors are forced to seek refuge on roofs, boulders, and high ground.
The monsters prove surprisingly intelligent, altering their strategies and undermining the town's buildings. The survival hinges on a heavily armed, doomsday-prepper couple—Burt and Heather Gummer—who wage a furious gun battle against a Graboid that breaks into their concrete-reinforced basement. Trapped on a set of crumbling boulders with the remaining Graboids circling them, the group uses pure human ingenuity. They construct makeshift distraction tools and use Burt's supply of homemade dynamite to trick the monsters into swallowing explosives. Val lures the final, smartest Graboid into charging at him on the edge of a mesa, dodging at the last second and causing the creature to burst through the cliff face, falling to its death on the rocks below. With the valley safe, Val and Rhonda spark a romantic connection as the remaining townspeople celebrate their survival.
