Brief Description
The Monster Club is a 1981 British horror-comedy anthology film directed by Roy Ward Baker. It serves as a fun, nostalgic cult classic that features a star-studded genre cast, including Vincent Price, John Carradine, and Donald Pleasence. The screenplay was written by Edward and Valerie Abraham, adapted from the horror stories of British author R. Chetwynd-Hayes.
Plot:
The film is tied together by a central "wraparound" framing narrative: The Meeting: A starving vampire named Eramus (Vincent Price) encounters the real-world horror author R. Chetwynd-Hayes (John Carradine) on a street and bites him for a quick snack. The Club: To show his deep gratitude for the "delicious" blood and to help the author gather fresh inspiration for his next book, Eramus invites him to The Monster Club. The Setting: The club is a lively, hidden underground disco where vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and other creatures gather to drink, chat, and dance to live rock and pop performances by real-world bands.
While drinking at the club, Eramus regales the amused author with three distinct macabre stories: The Shadmock Story: Centers on a lonely, hybrid creature called a Shadmock who lives isolated in a grand manor. When a pair of schemers attempt to romance him to steal his hidden wealth, they discover the terrifying power of his supernatural whistle. The Vampire Story: Features Donald Pleasence as a vampire hunter tracking down a family of vampires. The story focuses heavily on the strict rules and logic of how vampires operate. The Hungoo Story: Follows a film director scouting locations who stumbles into an isolated, eerie village inhabited by "Ghouls" (Hungoos) who eat the dead, trapping him in a harrowing environment.
