Brief Description
Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989) is a cult classic horror-comedy-Western directed by Anthony Hickox. The film centers on the isolated desert town of Purgatory, where a colony of vampires led by the ancient Count Jozek Mardulak (David Carradine) attempts to live peacefully alongside humanity. To survive without killing humans, they slather on heavy sun cream and rely on a factory that manufactures artificial synthetic blood.
Plot:
The town's fragile peace is threatened when human engineer David Harrison (Jim Metzler) and his family are brought to Purgatory to repair the failing artificial blood plant. Unbeknownst to them, a vampire civil war is brewing. A rebellious faction led by Ethan Jefferson (John Ireland) rejects the peaceful lifestyle and plots a revolution to return to hunting humans for food. To make matters more chaotic, Robert Van Helsing (Bruce Campbell)—a clumsy and naive descendant of the legendary vampire hunter—stumbles into the desert town heavily armed and intent on wiping out the undead, unaware that a massive, campy shootout between the two vampire clans is about to erupt.
