Brief Description
Leviathan is a 1989 science fiction horror film directed by George P. Cosmatos and written by David Webb Peoples and Jeb Stuart. Set in the crushing depths of the Atlantic Ocean, the movie follows an American deep-sea mining crew nearing the end of a 90-day assignment. Their routine mission turns into a claustrophobic nightmare when they discover the wreckage of a sunken Soviet vessel named Leviathan.
Plot:
After scavenging a watertight safe from the wreck, the crew unknowingly exposes themselves to a failed genetic experiment. This mutagenic virus begins mutating infected crew members into a grotesque, shape-shifting creature that absorbs its victims and stalks the remaining survivors inside their sealed underwater habitat. Just two days before completing their underwater mining rotation, crew members Sixpack and Williams explore a deep-sea trench and happen upon a scuttled Russian ship. They bring back a locked container filled with crew records, video logs, and a flask of vodka. Sixpack hides the contraband vodka and shares it with fellow crew member Bowman.
Shortly after, both begin exhibiting bizarre and painful medical symptoms as their DNA begins mutating. The crew discovers that the Russian ship was used for horrific genetic testing. As the infected individuals die, their physical bodies merge and transform into an aggressive, bloodthirsty organism. With an intense storm raging on the surface and preventing escape, the surviving crew—led by corporate geologist Steven Beck—must navigate their crumbling underwater facility to contain and destroy the evolving monster before it kills them all. The grotesque body-horror transformations and creature suits were designed by Academy Award-winning effects artist Stan Winston.
