Brief Description
Dr. Caligari (1989) is an American surrealist, avant-garde horror-comedy film directed by Stephen Sayadian and co-written by Jerry Stahl. Operating as a "quasi-sequel" to the legendary 1920 German Expressionist masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, the film trades the original's black-and-white shadows for a hyper-stylized, neon-drenched, and highly saturated 1980s aesthetic often described as a "psychosexual fever dream".
Plot:
The narrative centers on Dr. Caligari (Madeleine Reynal), the granddaughter of the original doctor, who runs the Caligari Insane Asylum (C.I.A.). Acting as a textbook mad scientist, she performs highly controversial, illegal mind-swapping and hormonal experiments on her patients by extracting and injecting glandular brain fluids. Her primary test subjects are Mrs. Van Houten (Laura Albert), a housewives committed by her husband for severe nymphomania, and Mr. Pratt (John Durbin), a cannibalistic serial killer addicted to shock therapy.
Dr. Caligari successfully swaps their core personality traits, turning Mrs. Van Houten into a cannibal and Mr. Pratt into a nymphomaniac. When outside doctors and family members try to intervene and stop her bizarre experiments, they too fall victim to her syringe-driven mind-swapping. By the end of the movie, the power dynamics flip entirely: Mrs. Van Houten injects Dr. Caligari with nymphomaniacal fluid while dosing herself with the brain fluid of the original 1920 Dr. Caligari, resulting in the patients completely taking over the asylum.
