Brief Description
Watchers (1988) is a science fiction horror film directed by Jon Hess, starring Corey Haim and Michael Ironside. Loosely based on the 1987 bestselling novel Watchers by Dean R. Koontz, the movie serves as the first installment in a four-film franchise. Originally distributed by Universal Pictures in late 1988, the movie went out of print on DVD for many years. However, a new physical media release has brought it back to modern audiences, with Arrow Video's sub-label, Toy Robot Video, scheduling a brand-new Blu-ray edition release on October 20, 2026.
Plot:
The story kicks off with a massive explosion and fire at a top-secret, classified genetic engineering laboratory. Two biologically altered specimens escape into the surrounding woods during the chaos :A golden retriever modified to possess human-level, super-intelligence. The OXCOM (Outside Experimental Combat Mammal), a savage, mutated monster engineered as a lethal military weapon. Travis Cornell (Corey Haim), a lonely teenager, stumbles across the runaway dog and decides to take him in, quickly discovering the animal's bizarrely advanced intellect.
However, a psychic link connects the OXCOM to the dog, driving the monstrous beast to ruthlessly track the canine down and slaughter anyone standing in its way. At the same time, Lemuel "Lem" Johnson (Michael Ironside), a cold-blooded National Security Organization agent, initiates a violent government cover-up to reclaim both experimental subjects at all costs. Travis, along with his mother Nora, must protect the highly gifted dog while evading both a government conspiracy and an unstoppable killing machine.
