Brief Description  The Funhouse (1981) is an American slasher horror film directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Larry Block. Released by Universal Pictures on March 13, 1981, it was Hooper's first major studio film following his independent successes like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The film revolves around a group of teenagers who become trapped inside a dark ride at a traveling carnival, where they are hunted by a deformed killer.

Plot:
The story follows Amy Harper (Elizabeth Berridge), a suburban teenager who rebels against her father's explicit warnings and goes to a local traveling carnival on a double date. She is joined by her boyfriend Buzz (Cooper Huckabee) and their friends Liz (Largo Woodruff) and Richie (Miles Chapin). After a night of taking drugs and wandering the fairgrounds, the teenagers decide to pull a prank and sneak into the carnival's spooky "Funhouse" dark ride to spend the night. While hiding inside the ride after hours, the group witnesses a horrific real-life crime: a deformed, albino carnival worker named Gunther (Wayne Doba)—who wears a Frankenstein mask—brutally murders a fortune teller after an argument.

When the teenagers try to escape, they find themselves locked inside the machinery of the building. Gunther’s father, the ruthless carnival barker Conrad Straker (Kevin Conway), discovers that there were witnesses to the crime and orders his son to eliminate them. A deadly cat-and-mouse game ensues through the dark, automated corridors of the attraction as the teens fight for survival. Though set in a Midwestern town in Iowa, the movie was primarily filmed on backlots at Norin Studios in Miami, Florida. Hooper relies heavily on a surreal, sleazy, and neon-drenched carnival atmosphere rather than quick, non-stop jump scares. Produced on a budget of roughly $3.7 million, it brought in a modest $7.9 million at the box office.
