Brief Description
They Live (1988) is a subversive sci-fi action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter. Starring professional wrestler "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Keith David, the movie serves as a campy yet biting satirical critique of Reaganomics, consumerism, and mass media manipulation. Roddy Piper delivered one of cinema's most famous ad-libbed action lines: "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Plot:
The story follows Nada (Roddy Piper), a homeless, blue-collar drifter who arrives in Los Angeles looking for work. After taking a job at a construction site, he stumbles upon a resistance movement operating out of a local church. There, he discovers a box of seemingly ordinary sunglasses. When Nada puts them on, he sees the world in black-and-white as it truly is: the city's ruling class and social elite are actually skull-faced extraterrestrial invaders. Furthermore, all forms of media, advertising, and currency are embedded with bleak subliminal messages commanding humans to "OBEY," "CONSUME," "REPRODUCE," and "STAY ASLEEP." Teaming up with his skeptical fellow construction worker, Frank (Keith David), Nada launches a violent, heavily armed crusade to locate the aliens' broadcast transmitter, destroy their signal, and wake up humanity.
