Brief Description
Child's Play (1988) is an American supernatural slasher film that marks the iconic debut of the infamous killer doll, Chucky. Directed by Tom Holland and co-written by Don Mancini, the film famously blends tense horror with streaks of dark comedy. It grossed over $44 million worldwide on a modest $9 million budget, launching a massive multi-media franchise.
Plot:
The story begins in Chicago, where notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) is hunted down and fatally shot by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) inside a toy store. Before succumbing to his wounds, Ray uses a voodoo incantation to transfer his soul into a popular, red-haired "Good Guy" doll. Meanwhile, struggling single mother Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks) is desperate to buy the hot-ticket doll for her six-year-old son, Andy (Alex Vincent). Unable to afford retail prices, she buys a cheap one from a street peddler, completely unaware that it contains Ray's consciousness.
Andy names the doll Chucky, but things turn sinister when Chucky begins executing those who wronged him in life, starting with Andy’s babysitter. Andy tries to warn the adults that his doll is alive, but his claims are dismissed, and he is institutionalized. The horror escalates when Karen discovers Chucky can speak without batteries, prompting a desperate race alongside Detective Norris to stop the doll before he can permanently transfer his soul into Andy's human body. Charles Lee Ray's name is a combination of three real-life killers: Charles Manson, Lee Harvey Oswald, and James Earl Ray.
