Brief Description
Brain Damage (1988) is an American comedy-horror film written and directed by exploitation auteur Frank Henenlotter. The film serves as a darkly comedic, stylized, and garish body-horror allegory for drug addiction. The film is widely praised as an unsubtle yet brilliant metaphor for the devastating cycle of substance abuse, withdrawal, and the lengths a person will go to sustain a high.
Plot:
The story follows Brian (played by Rick Hearst), a young man living in a neon-lit, seedy Manhattan apartment. His life changes drastically when he becomes the host to an ancient, talking, phallic parasite named Aylmer (voiced by horror host John Zacherle). Aylmer attaches himself to Brian's neck and injects a highly addictive, euphoric fluid directly into his brain, granting him vibrant, psychedelic hallucinations and an extraordinary high. However, this symbiotic relationship comes with a horrifying price: to keep receiving the fluid, Brian must travel the city streets and provide Aylmer with his only food source—fresh human brains. As Brian's addiction spirals out of control, he undergoes severe physical and mental deterioration, withdrawing from his girlfriend and brother while being forced into a gruesome cycle of violence.
