Brief Description
The Kindred (1987) is an American sci-fi horror creature feature co-directed by Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow. The film is widely recognized in cult horror circles for its Lovecraftian themes and extensive use of gross, elaborate 1980s practical special effects. Special effects master Michael John McCracken designed five distinct evolution stages for the creature "Anthony," tracking its growth from a fetus-like stage into a full-grown tentacled monstrosity.
Plot:
The story follows a young geneticist named John Holland. On her deathbed, John's scientist mother, Dr. Amanda Hollins, makes a final request: he must go to his childhood home and destroy all lab notes and evidence from her final revolutionary experiments. Before passing, she also frantically blurts out that he has another brother. John takes a group of his research assistants and friends to the secluded family estate to fulfill his mother's wishes. Once there, they discover that his mother's work involved merging human and fish DNA to force rapid human evolution. The horrifying result of her experiment is John's literal "half-brother"—a massive, aggressive, tentacled mutant monster named Anthony who is hidden on the property. The situation escalates dramatically as John and his friends try to manage the situation while a ruthless, mad scientist, Dr. Philip Lloyd, attempts to steal the creature for his own malicious genetic research.
