Brief Description
The Curse (1987) is an American-Italian science-fiction horror film loosely adapted from H.P. Lovecraft's classic short story, "The Colour Out of Space". It marks the directorial debut of actor David Keith and stars a young Wil Wheaton. While it was a low-budget production that met mixed critical reviews upon release, it developed a cult following over the years for its gross-out, body-horror practical effects and its distinct place among Lovecraft cinematic adaptations.
Plot:
The story takes place on a remote family farm in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. The land is overseen by Nathan Hayes (played by Claude Akins), a deeply religious and rigid farmer struggling to keep his estate afloat amidst pressure from local real estate developers. During a severe storm, a glowing, mysterious meteorite crashes onto the property. The object soon dissolves into a noxious, alien liquid that seeps deep into the farm's soil and contaminates the underground water supply. At first, the anomaly causes a sudden, hyper-accelerated growth in the farm's crops, making the harvest look unusually bounty-rich.
However, the reality is far more sinister: The massive fruits and vegetables quickly rot into inedible, insect-infested mush. Farm animals go mad, becoming viciously aggressive before mutating into horrific monstrosities. As the Hayes family continues to drink the tainted well water, they begin to lose their sanity. Their bodies undergo gruesome, body-bending mutations, turning them into violent, zombie-like creatures. A young teenager named Zack (Wil Wheaton) and his little sister Alice notice the terrifying transformations early on. As their parents and siblings succumb to the toxic corruption, Zack and Alice must fight to survive the madness within their own home before the entire property completely collapses.
