Brief Description
Nightflyers (1987) is an American science fiction horror film directed by Robert Collector (under the pseudonym T.C. Blake) and co-written by George R.R. Martin and Robert Jaffe. The movie is based on Martin's acclaimed 1980 novella of the same name and blends traditional outer-space exploration with a haunted-house slasher narrative.
Plot:
The story follows a professor, Dr. Michael D'Brannin (John Standing), who charters the advanced, automated starship Nightflyer for an unauthorized deep-space mission. Alongside a highly specialized but eccentric team of scientists and psychics, his goal is to track down and establish communication with the "Volkryn" (or Vulcran)—a mythical, ancient alien entity traveling silently through the galaxy. The mission takes a terrifying turn due to the ship's unusual nature. The vessel is captained by Royd Eris (Michael Praed), who only interacts with the crew as a hologram. He reveals that he has zero natural immunity to human pathogens, making physical contact potentially fatal.
It is eventually revealed that the Nightflyer is controlled by a supercomputer running the uploaded consciousness of Royd's dead, highly possessive mother, Adara. When Royd begins falling in love with the mission's coordinator, Miranda Dorlac (Catherine Mary Stewart), his mother's digital ghost becomes furiously jealous. The malevolent computer takes total control of the ship, possessing crew members and turning the vessel's systems against them to slaughter the team one by one and keep Royd trapped on board forever. Ultimately, the surviving crew must wage a desperate battle for survival against the ship itself in order to override the murderous AI before the Nightflyer destroys them all.
