Brief Description
Near Dark (1987) is a neo-Western horror film about a young farm boy who gets bitten by a female drifter and forced to join a nomadic family of murderous vampires. Despite struggling at the box office upon release, it is now celebrated as an influential cult classic. The film features several cast members from James Cameron’s Aliens.
Plot:
Small-town Oklahoma farm boy Caleb Colton meets an alluring drifter named Mae. Just before dawn, she bites his neck, infecting him with vampirism. Incapable of surviving the sunlight, Caleb is abducted by Mae’s tight-knit, ruthless family of roving vampires led by the weathered Jesse Hooker. Caleb refuses to hunt and kill humans, so Mae feeds him her own blood from her wrist to keep him alive. When the violent clan threatens his biological father and sister, Caleb must choose between his loyalty to his new family and his blood relatives. The movie trades traditional gothic conventions (like crosses, garlic, and fangs) for a dusty, modern-day American heartland aesthetic, playing out like an outlaw Western mixed with body horror.
