Brief Description
Munchies (1987) is a low-budget American comedy horror film directed by Tina Hirsch, written by Lance Smith, and produced by B-movie legend Roger Corman. Explicitly made to capitalize on the massive success of Gremlins, it is widely regarded as a playful, campy knockoff. Despite the original monsters turning into stone statues at the end of the film, it spawned two loosely related comedy sequels: Munchie (1992) and Munchie Strikes Back (1994).
Plot:
The story follows Simon Watterman (played by Harvey Korman), a "space archaeologist" who uncovers a small, seemingly peaceful alien creature inside a cave in Peru. He smuggles the creature back to the United States, where his son Paul and Paul's girlfriend Cindy name it Arnold. Chaos strikes when Simon’s evil twin brother, a greedy snack-food entrepreneur named Cecil Watterman (also played by Harvey Korman), wiretaps Simon's house and kidnaps Arnold to secure a business advantage. While in captivity, the kidnappers abuse the creature, causing Arnold to turn aggressive, sprout sharp talons, and grow vicious teeth.
When Cecil's sidekicks attempt to destroy the creature by chopping it into pieces, they inadvertently activate its defense mechanism: every piece regenerates into a brand new, fully formed "Munchie." The newly multiplied horde of creatures—who possess distinct personalities and speak perfect English with plenty of attitude—escape and terrorize the small Texas town. Driven by an insatiable appetite for junk food, beer, and general destruction, the creatures wreck everything from a mini-golf course to a local video store. It is up to Paul and Cindy to figure out a way to stop the multiplying monsters before they destroy the entire town.
