Brief Description
Possession (1981) is an intense psychological horror drama film directed by Polish filmmaker Andrzej ?u?awski and starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill. Set against the stark, paranoid backdrop of Cold War-era West Berlin, the film serves as a surreal, disturbing allegory for the painful collapse of a marriage. ?u?awski wrote the screenplay during his own highly tumultuous, painful divorce from actress Ma?gorzata Braunek. He used the film's extreme horror and chaotic tone to visually process his personal emotional wreckage.
Plot:
The story follows Mark (Sam Neill), an international spy who returns home to Berlin only to find that his wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani), wants a divorce. Initially, she refuses to give a clear reason for the split. As Mark investigates out of desperate jealousy, he discovers she is having an affair with a eccentric man named Heinrich. However, Anna's behavior rapidly spirals into extreme, erratic madness. Mark hires private investigators to track her to a secluded, rundown apartment, where they discover she is hiding something far more sinister than a human lover: a grotesque, tentacled, demon-like creature. As the narrative progresses, the film shifts from a domestic drama into a gruesome body horror nightmare, involving murder, doppelgängers, and spiritual manifestation.
