Brief Description
Graveyard Shift (also released as Central Park Drifter) is a 1987 Canadian horror-drama film written and directed by Jerry Ciccoritti. It should not be confused with the 1990 Stephen King creature-feature adaptation of the same name. Despite its New York setting, the movie was filmed entirely in Toronto. It is highly regarded by B-movie enthusiasts for its distinct 1980s neo-noir atmosphere, characterized by rain-slicked streets, wet neon lighting, saturated synth-pop, and heavily stylized framing.
Plot:
The story centers on Stephen Tsepes (played by Michael A. Miranda, credited as Silvio Oliviero), a centuries-old vampire who works the perfect nocturnal job: driving a New York City taxi cab on the graveyard shift. Stephen targets passengers who are already dying or contemplating suicide, preying on them and converting them into a lingering coven of vampire "wives". Because he does not completely destroy them, his victims begin running amok through the city, triggering an epidemic of gruesome slasher-style murders that leaves the local police baffled.
The status quo shifts when Stephen crosses paths with Michelle Hayden (Helen Papas), a frustrated music video director battling a terminal illness. Unhappy in her marriage to an unfaithful husband, Michelle finds herself drawn to the mysterious cab driver, and the two launch into a passionate romance. However, according to the film's unique lore, Stephen faces deadly consequences if he experiences genuine human love. As their bond deepens, a jealous husband, erratic newborn vampires, and a relentless police investigation close in on them.
