Brief Description
The Wraith (1986) is an American supernatural action-fantasy cult classic written and directed by Mike Marvin. Set in a sun-baked Arizona desert town, the film uniquely blends 1980s street-racing culture with an otherworldly revenge story, featuring a high-octane soundtrack and a legendary concept car.
Plot:
The story follows a ruthless gang of motorized punks led by the psychopathic Packard Walsh (Nick Cassavetes). The gang terrorizes local motorists, forcing them into illegal drag races to steal their cars for pink slips. When Packard brutally murders a decent teenager named Jamie Hankins for being close to Keri (Sherilyn Fenn)—the girl Packard obsessively claims as his own—a cosmic intervention takes place. Soon after, two mysterious figures arrive in town: Jake Kesey (Charlie Sheen): A cool, rugged biker who arrives on a dirt bike and immediately strikes up a romance with Keri while befriending Jamie’s younger brother, Billy. The Wraith: A silent, helmeted phantom clad in futuristic black armor who drives an invulnerable, glowing black sports car—the Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor.
The Wraith challenges the gang members to drag races one by one, methodically destroying them in fiery, supernatural car crashes while leaving their bodies completely unmarked except for missing eyes. Meanwhile, the eccentric local Sheriff Loomis (Randy Quaid) is left entirely helpless trying to stop the otherworldly vehicular carnage. Though it only received a very limited theatrical release in November 1986 and mixed reviews from critics, The Wraith became a massive staple of late-night television and VHS rentals. It is highly regarded by fans of 80s cheese for its synth-heavy rock soundtrack (featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe, and Bonnie Tyler), its practical car stunts, and the iconic use of the real-life Dodge M4S twin-turbo concept pace car.
