Brief Description
Link (1986) is a British psychological horror film about a young zoology student who becomes trapped in a remote seaside mansion with an eccentric professor's dangerously intelligent orangutan butler.
Plot:
The story follows Jane Chase (Elisabeth Shue), an American zoology student studying in the United Kingdom. She takes a job as a research assistant for the eccentric primatologist Dr. Steven Phillip (Terence Stamp) at his isolated, seaside English estate. Dr. Phillip shares his home with three apes: two chimpanzees named Imp and Voodoo, and a brilliant, 45-year-old orangutan named Link, who serves as the household's uniformed butler. Link is a former circus performer who possesses near-human intelligence, but also hides a deep malice toward humans. The situation turns sinister when Dr. Phillip decides that Link has become too dangerous and must be euthanized.
Shortly after, the professor mysteriously vanishes, one of the chimpanzees is found dead, and Link completely cuts off the estate from the outside world by severing the phone lines. Trapped in the house with wild dogs patrolling the perimeter, Jane is forced into a claustrophobic, psychological game of survival against an increasingly aggressive and vengeful primate. Despite the script explicitly identifying Link as a chimpanzee, he was actually portrayed by a large Bornean orangutan named Locke. Filmmakers disguised this by dyeing his hair black.
