Brief Description
The Car (1977) is an American supernatural horror film directed by Elliot Silverstein that tells the story of a mysterious, unmanned, and seemingly demonic black automobile that goes on a murderous hit-and-run rampage through a small desert town. Often described during its release as "Jaws on wheels," the film has grown from a box-office underdog into a beloved cult classic.
Plot:
The quiet, isolated desert community of Santa Ynez, Utah, is thrown into terror when a sleek, heavily customized black coupe appears out of nowhere. The vehicle begins systematically running down locals, starting with two cyclists and a hitchhiker. When the car intentionally targets a local school marching band and kills the town's police sheriff, Captain Wade Parent (James Brolin) takes charge of the investigation. The townspeople quickly realize they aren't dealing with a normal hit-and-run driver—the vehicle is completely driverless, completely silent inside, and heavily implied to be a paranormal manifestation of pure evil or the Devil himself. It exhibits terrifying properties, such as being physically unable to enter a hallowed local cemetery where townsfolk seek refuge. After the car brutally kills Wade's schoolteacher girlfriend, Lauren, by driving straight through her house, a heartbroken Wade teams up with a local demolition expert named Amos. Together, they construct a trap to lure the demonic machine into a canyon quarry and detonate dynamite, burying the evil entity under tons of rock.
