Brief Description
Shock Waves (1977) is a cult classic American horror film about a group of tourists who encounter a battalion of aquatic Nazi zombies after becoming shipwrecked on a remote island. Co-written and directed by Ken Wiederhorn, the movie is widely considered one of the defining "sleeper" horror films of the late 1970s. Shot on a low budget in Florida (meant to represent the Caribbean), the film utilizes a grainy, low-budget look that critics note adds a level of grit, isolation, and genuine dread to the storyline.
Plot:
The story begins with a small yachting party traveling the open seas. Their boat experiences a freak accident when it is struck by a mysterious, decaying old freighter that seems to appear out of nowhere. Forced to abandon ship, Captain Ben and his passengers seek shelter on a seemingly deserted tropical island. However, they soon discover they are not alone. The island is home to a reclusive former SS commander living in exile. The commander reveals a terrifying secret: during World War II, Nazi scientists engineered a top-secret race of indestructible, genetically altered zombie storm troopers known as the "Death Corps". These begoggled, unstoppable monstrosities can survive underwater and walk along the ocean floor. Having slumbered in the sunken wreckage nearby, the aquatic Nazi zombies rise from the depths to ruthlessly hunt down the surviving tourists.
