Brief Description  Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) is a classic cult science fiction horror film belonging to the 1970s "eco-horror" or "nature strikes back" subgenre. Directed by John "Bud" Cardos and starring William Shatner, the movie became a massive commercial success, grossing over $17 million on a meager budget of roughly $500,000. It is highly remembered for its eerie atmosphere, peak over-the-top Shatner performance, and its extensive use of thousands of real, live tarantulas.

Plot:
The film takes place in the sleepy rural town of Camp Verde, Arizona. Local country veterinarian Dr. Robert "Rack" Hansen (William Shatner) is called to investigate the sudden, puzzling death of a prize calf on Walter Colby’s (Woody Strode) farm. When a visiting entomologist, Dr. Diane Ashley (Tiffany Bolling), arrives to assist, they uncover a terrifying ecological anomaly: widespread overuse of chemical pesticides has eradicated the local insect population—the tarantulas' primary food source. Depleted of food, the tarantulas have mutated into an aggressive, hyper-intelligent collective force. Instead of living as solitary cannibals, they form massive swarms and expand their diet to include larger prey—first local livestock and dogs, and eventually, humans.

As millions of venomous arachnids migrate through the area, they completely cut off and overrun the town. Rack, Diane, and a small band of surviving townsfolk find themselves trapped inside a remote lodge, fighting for their lives as the spiders assault the building and encase it in a giant cocoon of webbing. Unlike many creature features of its era that relied heavily on cheap models or optical illusions, the production utilized an estimated 5,000 live tarantulas, adding a highly realistic and deeply uncomfortable visual element for arachnophobic viewers. The film is frequently cited as a major influence on the 1990 horror-comedy blockbuster Arachnophobia.
