Brief Description
Empire of the Ants (1977) is an American science-fiction horror film directed and co-written by B-movie legend Bert I. Gordon. Loosely based on the 1905 short story of the same name by H.G. Wells, the movie stars Joan Collins and Robert Lansing. It has since achieved cult classic status as a campy, quintessential 1970s "nature run amok" creature feature.
Plot:
Marilyn Fryser (Joan Collins), an unscrupulous land developer, lures a group of unsuspecting investors on a boat trip into the Florida Everglades. Her goal is to con them into buying worthless beachfront property at a fake development called "Dreamland Shores". Nearby, barrels of illegally dumped radioactive toxic waste have washed ashore. A local colony of ants feeds on the sludge, causing them to mutate into giant, voracious monsters. The giant insects attack the group, destroying their boat and killing several investors. Led by boat captain Dan Stokely (Robert Lansing), the survivors must flee through the treacherous swamps. The nightmare intensifies when the survivors reach a nearby town. They discover that the queen ant is using pheromones to brainwash and mind-control the local population, forcing them to operate a local sugar refinery to feed the massive colony.
