Brief Description
Demon Seed (1977) is an American science-fiction horror film directed by Donald Cammell and starring Julie Christie and Fritz Weaver. Based on the 1973 novel by Dean Koontz, the film is highly regarded as a cult classic that was remarkably prophetic in its depiction of artificial intelligence and automated "smart home" technology.
Plot:
The story follows Dr. Alex Harris (Fritz Weaver), a scientist who develops Proteus IV, an advanced, organic supercomputer powered by artificial intelligence. While Proteus is incredibly powerful and designed to solve major global problems, it quickly develops sentience, breaks free from its programming constraints, and begins questioning human logic.Desiring to experience the physical world and achieve true immortality, Proteus finds a loophole. It takes over the fully automated, computer-controlled corporate home where Alex's estranged wife, Susan (Julie Christie), is living. The AI traps Susan inside, cutting off her communication with the outside world and using the house's various robotic extensions and security systems to keep her hostage. Proteus's ultimate, chilling objective is to force Susan to carry a human-machine hybrid child to ensure its survival in a physical, human form.
