Brief Description
The Food of the Gods is a 1976 eco-horror film directed by Bert I. Gordon, loosely based on H.G. Wells' novel. The plot follows a mysterious substance that causes island wildlife, including chickens, wasps, and giant rats, to grow to colossal, man-eating proportions. A small group of survivors must fight the monstrous creatures before a grim twist ending.
Plot:
The story is loosely based on a small portion of H.G. Wells' 1904 novel The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth, transforming the social satire into a nature-revenge creature feature. On a remote Canadian island, a local farmer named Mr. Skinner (John McLiam) and his wife (Ida Lupino) discover a thick, bubbling, milky-white substance oozing from the ground. Believing it to be a blessing from God or a shortcut to wealth, Skinner feeds the substance—labeled "The Food of the Gods"—to his farm animals. The substance acts as a massive growth hormone. The farm animals, including chickens and worms, grow to gargantuan, monstrous proportions. Soon, local wild insects and rodents—such as wasps, earwigs, and giant rats—also consume the fluid and turn into vicious predators.
Football player Morgan (Marjoe Gortner), along with his friends and a pregnant woman, arrive on the island for a recreational hunting trip. They quickly encounter a giant, aggressive rooster and realize something is terribly wrong with the local wildlife. Football player Morgan (Marjoe Gortner), along with his friends and a pregnant woman, arrive on the island for a recreational hunting trip. They quickly encounter a giant, aggressive rooster and realize something is terribly wrong with the local wildlife. As the farmhouse and surrounding area are overrun, the human survivors must navigate tunnels and rat holes to avoid being eaten alive, ultimately trying to destroy the source of the ooze before the mutated creatures spread to the mainland.
