Brief Description
Squirm is a 1976 American natural horror cult classic written and directed by Jeff Lieberman in his feature directorial debut. The film belongs to the "nature's revenge" subgenre popular in the 1970s and revolves around a fictional small town in Georgia that becomes overrun by millions of flesh-eating, aggressive earthworms following a severe electrical storm. The movie is highly regarded in horror history for its special effects, which marked the first use of prosthetic makeup by legendary academy-award-winning makeup artist Rick Baker.
Plot:
The story is set in the sleepy, rural town of Fly Creek, Georgia. A violent thunderstorm hits the area, knocking down massive overhead power lines. High-voltage lines land on the wet, muddy ground, pumping millions of volts of electricity into the soil. Instead of killing the subterranean earthworm population, the intense voltage mutates them—rendering them incredibly aggressive, carnivorous, and capable of emitting an eerie, high-pitched shrieking sound. Meanwhile, a city boy named Mick (Don Scardino) arrives in town to visit his girlfriend, Geri Sanders (Patricia Pearcy). Mick's arrival triggers a tense love triangle with Roger Grimes (R.A. Dow), a local boy and apprentice worm farmer who harbors unrequited feelings for Geri.
As Mick and Geri attempt to navigate the storm's aftermath, they begin discovering bizarre clues—including a human skeleton in a backyard and a glass of egg cream crawling with worms. Local authorities dismiss Mick's warnings as city-boy paranoia. However, the mutated worms multiply rapidly, attacking anything in their path. Roger is horribly disfigured when a cluster of worms burrows directly into his face, driving him insane. In the film’s chaotic climax, millions of worms flood the town, bursting out of showerheads, overtaking houses, and burying residents alive. Mick and Geri are forced into a desperate fight for survival as they try to escape the writhing, flesh-eating tide.
