Brief Description
The Andromeda Strain (1971) is a classic American science-fiction thriller directed and produced by Robert Wise, adapted by Nelson Gidding from Michael Crichton’s breakout 1969 novel. The film is celebrated as a highly realistic, clinical, and methodical "scientific procedural" that pioneered the modern pandemic thriller genre.
Plot:
When an American military Scoop satellite crashes near the remote desert town of Piedmont, Arizona, it accidentally brings back a deadly extraterrestrial microorganism. The pathogen instantly clots human blood, turning it into a dry powder and killing the entire population except for two anomalous survivors: a crying 6-month-old infant and a 69-year-old Sterno-drinking alcoholic. The U.S. government mobilizes Project Wildfire, a top-secret emergency response protocol. A team of four elite scientists is rushed to a clandestine, ultra-sterile, five-story underground laboratory in Nevada. Under a total news blackout, they must race against time to understand and isolate the alien virus—code-named "Andromeda"—before it wreaks worldwide havoc. Unlike typical Hollywood films of the era, the movie features no big-name stars, opting for veteran character actors to heighten its documentary-like realism.
