Brief Description
The Stepford Wives (1975) is a landmark satirical horror-thriller directed by Bryan Forbes with a screenplay by William Goldman. Based on Ira Levin's 1972 novel, the film serves as a chilling allegorical critique of patriarchal resistance to the 1970s women's liberation movement. It famously popularized the term "Stepford wife" to describe a pathologically submissive, homemaking-obsessed spouse.
Plot:
The story follows Joanna Eberhart (Katharine Ross), an ambitious, independent woman and semi-professional photographer who moves from Manhattan to the idyllic suburb of Stepford, Connecticut, with her husband Walter and their two daughters. Joanna quickly becomes unsettled by the local women, who possess no personal interests outside of compulsive house cleaning, cooking, and unyielding devotion to their husbands. Joanna befriends two other newcomers who share her modern, independent mindset: Bobbie Markowe (Paula Prentiss) and Charmaine Wimperis (Tina Louise). Together, they attempt to organize a women’s liberation group, but the other local wives can only talk about cleaning products and domestic chores.
The horror escalates when Charmaine returns from a weekend trip with her husband completely changed—suddenly acting like a vapid, perfectly groomed homemaker who fires her maid and destroys her cherished tennis court. Terrified, Joanna and Bobbie decide to investigate the secretive Stepford Men’s Association, led by the sinister Dale "Diz" Coba (Patrick O'Neal). When Joanna visits Bobbie to finalize plans to move away from the town, she finds Bobbie transformed into a cheerful, submissive caricature. In disbelief, Joanna stabs Bobbie with a kitchen knife. Instead of bleeding, Bobbie malfunctions like a broken machine, repeating the same actions over and over.
Joanna tries to flee with her children, but discovers Walter has hidden the car keys and her children are missing. She tracks them to the Men's Association mansion, where she confronts Dale Coba. Coba reveals the reality: the town's husbands are systematically murdering their wives and replacing them with lifelike, obedient audio-animatronic androids modeled to be "perfect" domestic servants. Joanna is cornered by her own robotic double, which possesses lifeless, pitch-black eyes. The replica approaches her with a stocking to strangle her. The film concludes with a chilling scene at the local supermarket. A beautifully dressed, vacuous Joanna glides through the aisles, exchanging meaningless, polite pleasantries with the other robotic wives of Stepford.
