Brief Description
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) is a British dark comedy horror film directed by Robert Fuest, starring Vincent Price as a disfigured theologian, musician, and mad scientist who systematically murders the medical team he blames for his wife's death. Renowned for its stunning Art Deco visual style, camp humor, and inventive, macabre death traps, the film stands as a monumental cult classic that heavily prefigured modern horror franchises like Saw.
Plot:
The story is set in London during the mid-1920s. The brilliant organist and scholar Dr. Anton Phibes is presumed dead after a horrific car crash while racing to reach his critically ill wife, Victoria Regina Phibes (played in photographs by Caroline Munro). Victoria dies on the operating table. Though scarred beyond recognition and left entirely mute from the accident, Phibes survives. Believing the medical team's incompetence killed his wife, Phibes resurfaces years later to enact a meticulous vendetta. Assisted by a beautiful, silent woman named Vulnavia (Virginia North), he uses an elaborate phonograph setup connected directly to an input jack in his neck to artificially speak. He vows that the nine individuals present during the surgery must die, mapping their executions to the Ten Plagues of Egypt from the Old Testament. As Scotland Yard Inspector Trout (Peter Jeffrey) investigates a string of increasingly bizarre murders, he uncovers the common link: every victim was part of Victoria Phibes’s surgical staff. Trout tries to protect the remaining doctors, but Phibes continuously outsmarts the police. Ultimately, Phibes kidnaps the son of the lead surgeon, Dr. Vesalius (Joseph Cotten), forcing the doctor into a deadly game to save his child, before Phibes embalms himself next to his preserved wife to escape justice.
Phibes constructs highly theatrical, mechanical, and biological traps to assassinate his targets: Boils: Dr. Dunwoody is attacked and torn apart by a swarm of rabid bats released into his bedroom. Frogs: Dr. Hargreaves attends a masquerade ball where he is fitted with a mechanical frog mask that slowly tightens, crushing his neck. Blood: Dr. Longstreet (Terry-Thomas) is bound to a chair while a machine pumps every drop of blood completely out of his body into bottles. Hail: A doctor is frozen solid inside his own car during a freak, localized ice storm engineered by Phibes. Bees: Dr. Hedgepath is trapped in his bed while Phibes introduces a swarm of bees that sting him to death through a hole in the ceiling. Beasts: An assassin disguised as a brass unicorn on a trophy head is catapulted across a room, impaling a doctor against a wall. Locusts: A nurse is coated in a chemical attractant while asleep, and Phibes unleashes a swarm of locusts that eat the flesh off her face. Darkness (The Final Trap): Dr. Vesalius is forced to perform a frantic surgery on his own son, who is strapped to a table beneath a container of deadly acid. Vesalius successfully retrieves a key implanted near his son's heart to free him just before the acid dumps—killing Vulnavia instead as she passes underneath.
