Brief Description
The Ghoul (1975)—also released under the titles Night of the Ghoul and The Thing in the Attic—is a British Gothic horror film directed by Freddie Francis. Produced by Tyburn Film Productions, the movie features a star-studded genre cast including Peter Cushing, John Hurt, and Veronica Carlson. Set in the 1920s, it blends a classic atmospheric English country house setting with themes of psychological trauma, religious guilt, and cannibalism.
Plot:
During a wild 1920s party, two wealthy, spoiled couples challenge each other to a midnight car race across the British countryside to Land's End. The group includes Daphne, her date Billy, Daphne's brother Geoffrey, and his girlfriend Angela. As heavy fog sets in, Daphne and Billy's car runs out of petrol. Billy leaves to find a fuel station but takes an unusually long time. Growing anxious, Daphne wanders into the fog looking for help and stumbles across a secluded, sprawling country estate. The mansion belongs to Dr. Lawrence, a former Christian missionary. Lawrence appears hospitable and invites Daphne inside to rest for the night. He tells her that he lost his wife and adult son during a missionary trip to India, and now lives in isolation with his Indian servant, Ayah. Lawrence instructs his unhinged, cruel caretaker, Tom Rawlings, to look for Billy.
Instead of helping, Tom finds Billy waiting by the car, violently attacks him, and pushes his vehicle into a deep ravine to cover his tracks. Back at the house, a dark and horrific truth emerges. Dr. Lawrence's son, Simon, is not dead. While in India, Simon was exposed to a bloodthirsty, pagan death cult that corrupted his mind. He has transformed into a soulless, cannibalistic monster—the "Ghoul"—whom Lawrence keeps locked in the attic out of a sense of paternal duty and crippling religious guilt. Daphne is eventually ambushed, murdered, and fed to the creature in the attic. When Geoffrey and Angela notice their friends never finished the race, they trace Daphne's steps back to Dr. Lawrence's estate. They quickly realize Lawrence's explanations do not add up, plunging them into a desperate trap where they must survive the psychotic caretaker, the defensive former priest, and the flesh-eating beast lurking upstairs.
