Brief Description
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Jaws (1975) is a landmark suspense thriller that invented the modern summer blockbuster business model. Based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel, the film blends a psychological battle over public safety with a gripping man-versus-nature survival adventure. It famously won three Academy Awards—for Film Editing, Original Dramatic Score, and Sound—and remains one of the most culturally significant films in history.
Plot:
The story is set on the fictional New England resort town of Amity Island just before the lucrative Fourth of July weekend. During a late-night beach party, a young woman named Chrissie Watkins goes skinny-dipping and is violently dragged underwater and killed by an unseen predator. The next morning, her remains are discovered on the shore. The town's new police chief, Martin Brody—a former New York City cop who is deeply afraid of the water—attributes her death to a shark attack and orders the public beaches closed. However, Mayor Larry Vaughn and local business leaders pressure the coroner to alter the official cause of death to a "boating accident," fearing that a closed beach will destroy the town's summer tourism economy. Brody reluctantly relents and keeps the beaches open. Shortly after, a young boy named Alex Kintner is devoured by the shark in broad daylight on a crowded beach. His grieving mother places a $3,000 bounty on the shark, sparking an influx of amateur, reckless fishermen. When local fishermen catch a large tiger shark, the town proclaims the danger over. However, Matt Hooper, an enthusiastic marine biologist from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, arrives and expresses skepticism that this shark is the true culprit. Upon examining the shark's stomach contents, Hooper confirms it has no human remains inside.
Brody and Hooper search the waters at night and discover the sunken vessel of local fisherman Ben Gardner; underwater, Hooper uncovers a massive great white shark tooth, though he drops it in terror after suddenly encountering Gardner's severed head. Mayor Vaughn ignores their warnings and refuses to close the beaches for the holiday. On July 4th, a false alarm panics beachgoers, while the actual great white shark enters a nearby estuary called the pond. It kills a boater and narrowly misses Brody's oldest son, Michael. A traumatized Brody forces the mayor to sign a contract hiring Quint, an eccentric, grizzled local shark hunter who previously offered to kill the beast for $10,000. Brody, Hooper, and Quint set sail on Quint's aging fishing vessel, the Orca, to locate and destroy the monster. Tensions rise between the trio: Quint is a hardened, working-class seafarer who despises Hooper’s expensive, high-tech academic equipment. After days of chumming the water, the men finally catch sight of the shark. Quint estimates it is a massive 25 feet long and weighs three tons. Quint harpoons the beast with heavy, yellow plastic barrels designed to keep it afloat and tire it out, but the shark proves exceptionally strong, dragging the barrels underwater and towing the Orca out to sea.
That evening, the three men temporarily bond over drinks and swap physical scars. Quint shares a chilling monologue detailing his survival of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II, recounting the horrific mass shark attacks suffered by the crew. The next morning, the shark returns with a vengeance, ramming the boat and disabling its engine. With the Orca slowly taking on water and sinking, Hooper decides to make a desperate move. He enters a submersible, shark-proof cage equipped with a lethal strychnine spear. The shark aggressively breaks the cage apart, forcing Hooper to drop his weapon and hide on the seabed. The shark then breaches the surface and slides directly onto the sinking deck of the Orca. Quint slips into the creature's gaping maw, screaming as he is crushed and dragged underwater. Trapped on the rapidly submerging mast of the ship, Brody is left entirely alone. He jams a pressurized scuba oxygen tank into the shark's mouth as it charges him. Using Quint's rifle, Brody fires multiple shots at the tank. The final bullet hits the target, causing a massive explosion that destroys the shark. Hooper resurfaces unscathed, and the two survivors construct a makeshift raft out of the leftover barrels, paddling back to Amity Island together.
