Brief Description
Bug (1975) is an American science fiction horror film directed by Jeannot Szwarc and produced by legendary horror showman William Castle. Based on the 1973 novel The Hephaestus Plague by Thomas Page, it explores themes of eco-horror, obsession, and mad science. It stands historically as the final film William Castle worked on before his death.
Plot:
The story follows a distinct two-act structure, transitioning from a classic town-in-peril creature feature to an isolated psychological thriller. The film opens with a massive earthquake that rocks a small, remote community in California. The tremor creates a deep fissure in the earth, releasing a previously dormant, prehistoric strain of giant cockroaches. Local biology professor James Parmiter (Bradford Dillman) begins studying the bugs. He discovers they are blind, feed strictly on carbon, and have a unique physiological trait: by rubbing their rear legs together, they can generate intense friction and ignite devastating fires. The "firebugs" terrorize the town, setting property ablaze and causing chaotic deaths. Tragically, the horror hits home when a bug crawls into the hair of Parmiter's wife, Carrie (Joanna Miles), setting her head on fire and killing her.
Following his wife's death, Parmiter falls into a spiral of grief and scientific obsession. He moves to an isolated cabin to continue his research. Because the subterranean bugs cannot survive long in normal atmospheric pressure, the original population begins to die out. To preserve them, Parmiter uses a pressure chamber to successfully crossbreed the prehistoric firebug with common household cockroaches. The resulting hybrid generation is far worse than the original parents: They develop large wings and the ability to fly. They shift from eating carbon to strictly consuming raw meat. They exhibit high, hive-mind intelligence and rudimentary psychic abilities.
The hybrid cockroaches quickly turn on their creator. They begin to demonstrate their cognitive power by arranging their bodies on the cabin walls to spell out English words to communicate with Parmiter. Realizing he has lost control of his creation, Parmiter tries to destroy them. The highly organized swarm overwhelms him, trapping him and driving him into the original earthquake fissure. The swarm plunges back into the depths of the earth as the fault line collapses and seals them away permanently. The interior set used for the Parmiter home was a modified version of the iconic set used for ABC's sitcom The Brady Bunch, which had been canceled by Paramount a year prior.
