Brief Description  The Crazies (1973)—also known by its original title Code Name: Trixie—is an American science fiction horror-action film written and directed by genre pioneer George A. Romero. Shot on a modest budget in Western Pennsylvania, the film is a raw, documentary-style exploration of societal collapse, government incompetence, and the breakdown of morality under extreme pressure. Unlike Romero’s standard zombie films, the threat stems from an accidental biological leak that amplifies the dark, unstable traits of otherwise ordinary citizens.

Plot:
The story is set in Evans City, Pennsylvania, a quiet, rural community. Unbeknownst to the residents, a military transport plane crashed nearby, contaminating the town's local water supply with an experimental, highly contagious bio-weapon code-named "Trixie". The virus behaves unpredictably: it either kills its host or induces permanent, incurable psychopathic insanity. The symptoms manifest as intense paranoia, a complete detachment from reality, loss of focus, and sudden bursts of extreme violence. The film opens abruptly when a local man burns his own house down with his family inside. As localized violence spikes, the U.S. Army—led by Colonel Peckem—swiftly arrives to lock down the town, enforcing a brutal military quarantine. Soldiers clad in white hazmat suits and gas masks begin forcefully herding citizens into a centralized holding area at the local high school.

A small pocket of survivors tries to evade the military dragnet and escape across the town border. This group includes David, an ex-Green Beret turned firefighter; his pregnant fiancée Judy, a local nurse; David's impulsive veteran friend Clank; a civilian named Artie, and Artie's teenage daughter, Kathy. As the group hides out, the lines of sanity blur. The military uses heavy-handed, violent, and sloppy tactics to contain the populace, causing the townspeople to fight back with firearms. Simultaneously, the virus infiltrates the escapees. Artie succumbs to the infection, losing his sanity and incestuously assaulting his daughter Kathy. Clank guns down Artie to save Kathy, but Kathy wanders off into a field, where she is killed by panicked, trigger-happy soldiers.

In the high school laboratory, Dr. Ralston Watts, the original scientist who developed Trixie, desperately analyzes blood samples to synthesize an antidote. However, the military's chaotic administration completely hinders his work. When Watts finally discovers a potential cure, he is misidentified as an infected civilian by aggressive soldiers, who throw him into the quarantine zone with the rioting crowd. His breakthrough data and samples are crushed and destroyed in the melee. Clank realizes he is infected and sacrifices himself in a shootout to buy time for David and Judy. Shortly after, an infected townsperson kills Judy. David is captured by the military. Ironically, David realizes he is naturally immune to Trixie, but he keeps his mouth shut out of sheer cynicism and anger toward the government. He is processed into the quarantine pens, completely anonymous, while Washington bureaucrats over the radio calmly discuss the potential necessity of using a nuclear bomb on the town as a definitive "failsafe" containment measure.
