Brief Description
Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural (1973) is a low-budget, highly atmospheric Southern Gothic horror film written and directed by Richard Blackburn. Also released under titles like Lemora, Lady Dracula and The Legendary Curse of Lemora, it subverts classic fairy tales like Alice in Wonderland into an unsettling, dreamlike nightmare about a young girl's descent into a world of religious hypocrisy and vampirism.
Plot:
Set in the deep American South during the 1930s Prohibition era, a notorious gangster and bank robber, Alvin Lee, catches his wife in bed with another man, murders them both, and flees into the night. His innocent, virginal, 13-year-old daughter, Lila Lee (played by 17-year-old Cheryl "Rainbeaux" Smith), is left orphaned and taken in by a local Baptist minister, Reverend Mueller. Lila is deeply religious and sings solos for the church. However, the reverend secretly harbors lustful, hypocritical desires for her. Lila soon receives a mysterious, urgent letter stating that her father was captured in the remote, abandoned town of Astaroth, is near death, and begs to see her. Lila sneaks away from the minister at night and takes a bus toward Astaroth. The journey quickly turns into a living nightmare as she must navigate a dark, eerie forest inhabited by mutated, animalistic ghouls and zombie-like subhumans afflicted by an unnamed plague.
Lila escapes the monsters and is rescued by Lemora (Lesley Gilb), a beautifully composed, aristocratic woman who takes Lila into her secluded Victorian mansion. Lemora treats Lila like a princess, showering her with affection and promising to reunite her with her father. Lila slowly discovers that Lemora is the "Queen of the Night"—the matriarch of a sophisticated, pale-eyed coterie of human-like vampires. These polished vampires are locked in a grotesque tribal war against the ugly, beastly, decaying ghouls roaming the woods outside. Lemora becomes obsessed with Lila's purity, initiating a highly stylized, erotically charged psychological seduction. Lila finds evidence of other missing children who came before her. In a chaotic, dreamlike climax, Lila discovers that her father has been mutated into a werewolf-like beast. She is forced to kill him to survive, falling completely into Lemora’s supernatural, vampiric web.
