Brief Description  Vampire Circus (1972) is a highly stylized, erotic, and gory late-period British horror film produced by Hammer Film Productions. Directed by Robert Young, the movie deviates from standard gothic formulas by blending traditional vampire mythology with a surreal, dark carnival atmosphere.

Plot:
The story begins in the 19th-century Serbian village of Stetl. The local nobleman, Count Mitterhaus (Robert Tayman), is revealed to be a vampire preying on the local children with the help of a villager's wife, Anna Mueller. Led by schoolteacher Albert Mueller (Laurence Payne) and Dr. Kersch (Richard Owens), the angry townsfolk storm the castle, brutally beat the Count, and drive a wooden stake through his heart. Before dying, Mitterhaus curses the village, vowing that their children will die to restore him to life. The villagers then turn on Anna, but Mueller saves his wife from execution. Instead, she is whipped and flees into the woods.

Fifteen years later, Stetl is devastated by a deadly outbreak of the plague. Believing the disease is a manifestation of the Count's curse, neighboring towns establish a strict military quarantine around Stetl, shooting anyone who tries to escape. Amidst this despair, a mysterious traveling caravan—the "Circus of Night"—managed by a woman named Serena (Adrienne Corri), manages to bypass the armed blockade and enter the village under the guise of providing entertainment to boost morale. The circus turns out to be a front for Count Mitterhaus’s surviving cult, led by his shapeshifting cousin Emil (Anthony Higgins). The bizarre, supernatural acts are performed by vampires who target the grown children of the original lynch mob.

As the circus sets up, local children begin vanishing or turning up dead, completely drained of blood. Dr. Kersch breaks past the quarantine lines to find medical help for the plague, leaving his son Anton (John Moulder-Brown) behind. Anton falls in love with Kersch's ward, Gretchen (Lynne Frederick), making them prime targets. The circus performers use an illusionary hall of mirrors to lure the remaining offspring of the mob back to the ruins of Mitterhaus’s castle. There, the blood of the slaughtered youth is slowly drained into the Count’s crypt, gradually reanimating his decayed corpse. It is also revealed that Serena is actually a magically rejuvenated Anna Mueller, returning to exact vengeance on the town that rejected her.

When Anton discovers the truth, he rallies the remaining villagers. Dr. Kersch returns with a military escort, bringing a shipment of plague vaccine, only to realize the real threat is supernatural. Armed with torches, crossbows, and stakes, the townspeople launch a final assault on the circus tents and the Count's castle. Mueller accidentally shoots Serena (his former wife) with a crossbow. Heinrich is impaled by a wooden cross beam, which simultaneously kills his twin Helga due to their psychic, symbiotic link. Anton enters the crypt just as Count Mitterhaus rises from his coffin. Using a heavy, cross-shaped structural brace from a broken window, Mueller decapitates the resurrected Count, breaking the curse once and for all. The castle collapses, burying the remains of the vampire circus forever.
