Brief Description
Dracula A.D. 1972 is a 1972 British gothic horror film produced by Hammer Film Productions that modernizes the iconic vampire mythos by placing it in the context of contemporary 1970s counterculture London. Directed by Alan Gibson, the movie is famously celebrated for reuniting Christopher Lee as Count Dracula and Peter Cushing as Professor Van Helsing for the first time in over a decade. It serves as the seventh installment in Hammer's Dracula franchise and aims a stylistic shift toward a younger audience by mixing traditional gothic elements with modern "Swinging London" tropes.
Plot:
The film opens in traditional Victorian style with a fierce, climactic battle in 1872 on top of a runaway carriage speeding through Hyde Park, London. Vampire hunter Lawrence Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) faces off against Count Dracula (Christopher Lee). The carriage violently crashes, and Dracula is severely wounded. Van Helsing uses a broken piece of a wooden carriage wheel to fully impale the Count through the heart. Dracula crumbles to ash, but the physical exertion proves fatal, and Lawrence Van Helsing collapses and dies alongside his enemy. Shortly after, a hidden, devoted servant of Dracula collects the vampire's silver ring and a vial containing his ashes. He buries these relics right next to Lawrence Van Helsing's fresh grave in the courtyard of the secluded St. Bartolph's Church.
One hundred years later, the scene transitions to 1972 London. Johnny Alucard (Christopher Neame)—the great-grandson of Dracula’s 1872 servant—is a charismatic, deeply disturbed rebel leading a group of thrill-seeking hippies. This group includes Jessica Van Helsing (Stephanie Beacham), the modern-day granddaughter of the current occult expert, Professor Lorrimer Van Helsing (also played by Peter Cushing). Johnny manipulates his unsuspecting friends into breaking into the now-abandoned, deconsecrated St. Bartolph’s Church to perform an edgy, theatrical "Black Mass". However, Johnny's ritual is completely real. He performs a bloody rite using the stolen ashes and sacrifices one of the group's members, Laura Bellows (Caroline Munro). As the rest of the terrified teenagers flee the church in horror, the ritual succeeds, and Count Dracula rises from his ashes once more.
Dracula remains hidden within the shadows of the ruined church, plotting complete vengeance against the bloodline of Van Helsing. He commands Johnny Alucard, whom he has initiated as a vampire minion, to lure Jessica Van Helsing to the church so she can be his ultimate prize. Meanwhile, the local police, led by Inspector Murray (Michael Coles), begin investigating Laura’s brutal murder. When Lorrimer Van Helsing notices his granddaughter's strange behavior and hears details about the occult crime scene, he connects the clues. He discovers Johnny’s true identity (realizing "Alucard" is "Dracula" spelled backward) and realizes his ancient family nemesis is back.
Johnny kidnaps Jessica and delivers her to the dark altar of St. Bartolph's. Lorrimer tracks them down, first confronting and destroying the vampire-turned Johnny Alucard. He then enters the church alone to save Jessica and finish Dracula once and for all. Lorrimer rigs the church with classic vampire countermeasures, including a pitfall trap lined with sharp wooden stakes. In a final, desperate physical struggle, Van Helsing throws holy water at Dracula and maneuvers the Count, causing him to fall directly into the pitfall trap. Dracula is impaled, and Lorrimer pushes a wooden stake deep into his chest to destroy him forever, successfully rescuing Jessica from the curse.
