Written by Brian Clemens, the movie presents a unique, gender-bending twist on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic 1886 novella. Instead of transforming into a monstrous man, Dr. Henry Jekyll transforms into a beautiful but psychotic and murderous woman known as Sister Hyde. The film is also highly notable for blending the fictional narrative with historical Victorian crimes, including the Jack the Ripper murders and the Burke and Hare grave-robbing cases.
Plot:
In Victorian London, Dr. Henry Jekyll dedicates his life to finding an all-purpose elixir to cure human diseases. His friend, the cynical Professor Robertson, points out that Jekyll's research is so vast it will take more years than the scientist has left to live. Obsessed with completing his work, Jekyll pivots his goals toward finding an "elixir of life" to artificially extend human longevity. Because women statistically live longer than men, Jekyll reasons that the secret to immortality lies within female hormones. He successfully tests his thesis on a common fly, which survives days beyond its natural lifespan. Ready for human trials, Jekyll mixes a serum derived from female hormones and drinks it himself. Instead of merely extending his lifespan, the serum unlocks his repressed feminine side and physically transforms him into a stunning, seductive woman. When his upstairs neighbors, Howard and Susan Spencer, discover this mysterious woman in his laboratory, Jekyll covers his tracks by introducing her as his widowed sister, "Mrs. Edwina Hyde". However, Jekyll quickly discovers a horrifying catch: to maintain the serum's effects and prevent his body from rejecting the changes, he requires a continuous supply of fresh female hormones.
Jekyll initially employs the infamous grave robbers Burke and Hare to raid local cemeteries for female corpses. When an angry mob violently takes down the duo (hanging Burke and blinding Hare), Jekyll's supply line dries up. Driven by obsession and coaxed by an innocent remark from Susan that "the ends justify the means," Jekyll resorts to murder. He begins stalking the foggy alleyways of Whitechapel, targeting local sex workers to harvest their organs—inadvertently becoming the historical "Jack the Ripper". As the experiments continue, the formula alters more than just his body. Sister Hyde develops a distinct, malicious personality that grows increasingly dominant, wild, and power-hungry. A complex psychological web forms as Jekyll falls in love with Susan Spencer, while Sister Hyde simultaneously attempts to seduce Susan's brother, Howard. Professor Robertson begins investigating the Whitechapel murders and notes a surgical pattern to the victims. His suspicions lead him to Jekyll’s laboratory, where he encounters Sister Hyde instead. Hyde uses her allure to seduce the professor before stabbing him to death to protect her secret.
Hyde's persona begins to completely eclipse Jekyll's psyche. Recognizing that the blood of a pure, innocent victim will permanently cement her dominance over their shared body, Hyde stalks Susan Spencer with the intent to kill her. Jekyll's lingering consciousness fights back from within, forcing Hyde to drop the knife and spare Susan. Realizing he is losing his mind and body permanently, Jekyll determines he must commit one final murder to acquire enough hormones to stabilize his male form forever. He kills a final woman, but the police—alerted by the blinded Hare—converge on his laboratory. Jekyll escapes onto the rooftops of London but begins to involuntarily transform back into Sister Hyde mid-escape. Trapped on a high ledger, Hyde lacks the physical upper-body strength of Jekyll to hang on. She loses her grip and plunges to the pavement below. Upon impact with the ground, the corpse shifts into a grotesque, distorted fusion of both man and woman.
